George I of England loved a good party, and
what better entertainment than a late night
excursion down the River Thames with royal
friends, accompanied by a barge full of musicians!
One such event took place on July 17,
1717, and the King enjoyed the music so much that he asked that it be repeated three
times in succession - thus hosting a party
that lasted until 3:00 in the morning. And so
was born George Frederic Handel’s acclaimed
Water Music. These lively suites of dances
caught on in the general public like wildfire
and have remained one of Handel’s most popular
orchestral works throughout the years.
The famed Aulos Ensemble, America’s oldest
period instrument ensemble will bring
this spectacular masterpiece, the complete
Water Music, to Staller Center’s intimate
Recital Hall, joined by members of the
music department faculty, alums, and
students from the Stony Brook Baroque
Players to fill out the orchestra. The whole
production will be performed on original
instruments including Baroque strings,
natural trumpets and horns, wooden
Baroque flutes and more.
The program will also include Johann
Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto
#5 as well as the sublime chaconne
by one of Bach’s predecessors,
Georg Muffat.
Please join our royal
excursion – we promise
that the concert
will end before
3:00 am!
