Established in 1885 and
closed in 1996, Kings Park State Hospital on Long Island
warehoused close to
10,000 patients at its height. Among them was Lucy Winer,
the documentary film’s director, who was committed as a
suicidal teenager in the late 1960s. Over ten years, the
film follows Lucy’s efforts to confront her past. She
gets a rare opportunity to go back and visit Kings Park
as well as facilities that have replaced Kings
Park—small, successful and under-funded centers as well
as jails. The film raises questions about the distance
we've come and how far we have left to go.
Produced by Lucy Winer and
Karen Eaton. Director of Photography: Claudia Raschke-Robinson.
