Historical Note

Setauket Station was a stop on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, located in Setauket, New York. It opened in the 1870s, originally serving the small but growing community with both passenger and freight services. Like many stations on the LIRR during this period, it played a vital role in connecting rural Long Island towns to New York City and beyond. The station was relatively modest, with a small station house and limited facilities. It was particularly active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, during the LIRR’s expansion across Long Island. Telegraph messages and ticket sales records from the era show it was a hub for local communication and travel. As automobile travel became more common and transportation patterns shifted, ridership declined. The LIRR eventually discontinued service to Setauket Station, and the stop was closed in 1980. The station house was subsequently demolished.
