Business Honors Program (BHP)

Honors Program Requirements and Opportunities

business honors students at 2023 ureca conference

Achieving Honors in Business

Qualified students can graduate with honors in the College of Business. Admission requirements for the honors program include an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher and an A-minus or better in BUS 215: Introduction to Business Statistics or BUS 220: Introduction to Decision Sciences. To graduate with honors requires an accumulated GPA of 3.5 or better, fulfillment of the courses below, and presenting at URECA. Admission committee decisions will also be considered in the evaluation process. Students’ progress and performance will be monitored throughout the program.

Students who perform poorly (below a cumulative 3.5 GPA) in their academic studies will be counseled and warned that they are in jeopardy of being dropped from the BHP. Following at least one warning, such students will not be permitted to continue in the BHP. Students entering as a business major, either as an existing Stony Brook student or transfer student, will be evaluated under the same criteria for curriculum and admittance to the BHP.

Required Courses (3 credits Each)

A 3-semester sequence of courses:

  • BUS 380 Honors: Emerging Topics in Business (Required)
  • BUS 495 Business Honors Program Thesis (Capstone Experience)
  • BUS 496 Business Honors Program Thesis (Capstone Experience)

Sustaining Program Eligibility

To remain in good standing within the Business Honors Program (BHP), students must meet specific academic and conduct requirements throughout their time in the program. These include:

  • Earning a grade of B-minus or higher in BUS 380; students who do not meet this requirement will be automatically removed from the BHP.

  • Maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above prior to graduation.

  • Upholding academic integrity—students found guilty of academic dishonesty are not eligible to graduate with University honors, even if they have completed all other requirements. This policy applies without exception to students in the College of Business.

Student progress is closely monitored throughout the BHP. Those whose GPA falls below 3.5 will be counseled and issued a warning. If performance does not improve, they will be dismissed from the program following at least one warning.

Students who enter the College of Business as declared business majors, whether current Stony Brook students or transfer students, will be evaluated using the same standards for BHP admission and curriculum.
